The preparation for the German U23 national team had already begun in Munich, where the team used the 1972 Olympic course for immediate competition preparation (UWV). Despite gastrointestinal infections and some injuries, the training was successful, and the atmosphere within the extended team of coaches, physiotherapists, and scientists was very good. I joined the U23 National Team on the flight from Munich to Plovdiv.

In Plovdiv, Bulgaria, the teams and coaches, as well as support staff, had to contend primarily with the hot conditions. Fortunately, all races were moved to the morning and early afternoon. Thanks to the good preparation by the DRV officials, the impact was limited. We had sufficient cooling vests, drinks, and ice water available.

The German U23 national team qualified for the A-final in 18 out of 21 boat classes, twelve of which are Olympic boat classes.

U23 national team coach Marcus Schwarzrock expressed satisfaction with the performance:

"I am alrtogether very satisfied. If someone had told me beforehand that we would be racing in 18 A-finals here, then I would not have believed it.
