It was a great pleasure for me to support the German Figure Skating Union team at the World Championships in Montpellier.
The 111th Figure Skating World Championships took place from March 21st to 27th, 2022, in Montpellier, France. Due to my colleagues who usually support the German team being otherwise engaged, the German Figure Skating Union (DEU) kindly chose me as the medical supervisor. The World Championships were marked by both the COVID-19 pandemic and the war on Ukraine.
For Germany, Minerva Fabienne Hase / Nolan Seegert finished in 5th place, Nicole Schott in 10th place, and Nikita Starostin in 22nd place.
Becoming involved in the care of the German Figure Skating team provided me with an insightful glimpse into a sport that is quite different from what I have previously worked with. It was fascinating to witness the level of body control and athletic skill required by figure skaters to perform breathtaking maneuvers on the ice. It was also impressive to see how well the athletes performed despite all the challenges and uncertainties due to the pandemic. The World Championships highlighted the importance of having good mental strength and mental preparation to succeed in such stressful circumstances. Being part of the medical team and supporting the athletes in their preparations and competitions was a fantastic experience.
