Ultrasound in Freiburg – joints, muscles and tendons
Ultrasound complements the orthopaedic examination when it can answer a specific question. In my practice, I interpret the images alongside your symptoms and examination findings.
When can ultrasound help?
It can assess tendons, muscles, bursae and fluid in a joint, for example. Depending on the question, structures can also be observed during movement. The examination uses sound waves rather than X-rays.
What happens during the examination?
After discussing your symptoms and examining you, gel is applied to the skin. I examine the relevant area with the ultrasound probe and explain the findings. We then discuss the next steps together.
What are the limitations?
The inside of bones and some deep structures cannot be adequately assessed. Depending on the clinical question, X-rays or MRI may be more suitable. A normal ultrasound does not rule out every cause of symptoms.
Preparation and appointments
Ultrasound of joints, muscles or tendons usually requires no special preparation. Wear clothing that allows access to the affected area and bring existing images and reports.
Book a consultation to assess your symptoms. We decide whether ultrasound is useful based on the examination. See your practice visit for travel information and documents to bring.
