Tennis elbow – diagnostics and treatment in Freiburg
Pain on the outside of the elbow is often caused by overloading the forearm tendons that attach there. Symptoms occur not only in tennis, but also with computer work, manual tasks, strength training or repeated gripping and lifting.
Possible causes
Tennis elbow usually involves load-related changes at the common extensor tendon attachment. Similar symptoms can also arise from the joint, nerves or the cervical spine. The diagnosis should therefore not be based on the location of pain alone.
How the assessment works
The examination assesses tenderness, strength, mobility and characteristic loading tests. Ultrasound can be useful for evaluating the tendon attachment, possible partial tears and the elbow joint. Further imaging is mainly required after injury, with an atypical course or for a specific additional question.
Conservative treatment
Treatment usually includes temporary activity modification, progressive strengthening of the forearm muscles, physiotherapy and ergonomic changes. Depending on duration and findings, supports, shockwave therapy or other targeted measures may be considered. Injections are used only after an individual assessment of benefits and risks.
When prompt assessment is advisable
Prompt assessment is advisable after an injury with marked restriction of movement, increasing swelling or redness, loss of strength, numbness or persistent pain at night.
Please note
This information is not a substitute for a medical examination. Persistent elbow pain should be assessed carefully so that loading can be rebuilt in a targeted manner.
