Foot and ankle pain – orthopaedic assessment in Freiburg
Foot and ankle symptoms may develop after injury, because of incorrect or excessive loading, or gradually over time. The course of the symptoms, the loading situation and the structures involved – joints, ligaments, tendons or bone – are important for diagnosis.
Possible causes
Common causes include ligament injuries after an ankle sprain, irritation of the Achilles or other tendons, osteoarthritis, malalignment, overuse reactions and stress injuries. Plantar fascia disorders, nerve irritation and inflammatory conditions can also cause pain.
How the assessment works
The examination assesses mobility, stability, foot alignment, gait, tenderness and function under load. Ultrasound can be particularly useful for tendon, ligament and soft-tissue disorders and for joint effusions. X-rays or MRI are added selectively when the result is expected to influence treatment.
Conservative treatment
Conservative treatment may include load management, functional exercises, physiotherapy, advice on footwear or insoles, supports, physical treatments or targeted injections. The aim is a resilient return to everyday activity and sport, rather than short-term pain relief alone.
When prompt assessment is advisable
Prompt medical assessment is required after an injury with severe swelling, deformity or inability to bear weight, and if redness, warmth or fever is increasing.
Please note
This information does not replace a medical examination. Sudden severe symptoms, obvious deformities, altered sensation or other warning signs should be assessed promptly by a medical professional.
