Achilles tendon pain and Achilles tendinopathy in Freiburg
Achilles tendon pain often develops gradually during running or jumping activities. Treatment requires distinguishing whether the symptoms are in the mid-portion of the tendon, at its insertion or in the surrounding tissue.
Typical symptoms
Common symptoms include start-up pain, morning stiffness, tenderness or increasing pain while running. Sudden increases in training, changes in surface or footwear, recovery and calf-muscle capacity may all play a role.
Diagnostics
The tendon, its insertion, the calf muscles, ankle mobility and response to load are examined. Ultrasound can provide additional information about tendon structure and associated findings. A sudden sharp pain, a palpable gap or marked loss of strength requires exclusion of a tendon rupture.
Conservative treatment
Treatment depends on the location and level of irritation. Temporary load modification and progressive strengthening of the calf muscles are often included. Depending on the findings, physiotherapy, orthoses or shockwave therapy may be considered. Return to sport is gradual.
Differential diagnoses
Not every pain above the heel originates from the Achilles tendon. A bursa, bony changes at the insertion, nerves or other tendons can produce similar symptoms.
Interpreting the load history
For the examination, it is helpful to know when pain occurs during or after exercise, how long it lasts and whether morning stiffness is present. Note any changes in training volume, pace, surface or footwear. Please bring previous findings and information about earlier treatments. Ultrasound can show tendon structure, thickness, the insertion region and associated findings; such changes are always interpreted together with symptoms and clinical function.
Please note
This information does not replace a medical examination. Sudden severe symptoms, marked deformity, paralysis or other warning signs should be assessed promptly by a medical professional.
